One of the most common SEO mistakes that is being made is using to many inbound links in the footer of the page. While this may be a good place to put links to a weaker page on the site, such as to a page with information about policy, those who are filling the footer with many links may not be doing the best thing for their website. This is named a nofollow link, and it will not count against a website when the strength of their links is being calculated. Most website owners have something on their page that they wouldn't mind making weaker, so choose to put that in the footer instead of a stronger link. Putting links in the footer is probably not having the results that a website wants, as it is has been shown that hardly anybody ends up clicking on them. Those who want these links to actually be used should choose to put them somewhere else, and cut down on the number of links within the footer. While some links may work well here, others can have a negative impact on the website and its rankings. This can take away from the strength of the rest of the links on the page. While using the wrong types of links in a footer can have a negative result for those who are attempting to use SEO to improve their rankings, there are ways to make these links more functional. They can be created to look more attractive, so that it doesn't look like links have simply been stuffed into the footer in a disarray. The only websites that might need a lot of links in this area are very large websites, but the majority have no need to do this. Only a few, good links in this area can end up serving a good purpose, but using this are wrong can do little to help those who are trying to improve their website. While nobody yet is sure, there is some evidence that several of the major search engines either devalue links in the footer right now, or are planning to do so in the near future. Avoiding making this mistake in the first place can help websites to create a better website and avoiding getting penalized in their search engine rankings. Many who have removed these multitude of links from their footer have noticed that their website's ranking improved after doing so.
