Even a non-business website or blog needs to load in a sufficiently reasonable amount of time otherwise people will leave quickly, never to come back.
There are just too many things that can impede your success, and slow loading times should not be one of them because it is easy to avoid. Consider that your site needs to load in under five seconds, and there are people who will still complain about that. We do not have enough space to be comprehensive about the methods you can employ, however we can get you off to a good start.
Blog owners who know what they're doing will probably not have any issues with their database - but you could which could contribute to the problem. When blogs are loading slowly, then you really should at least check out your database and ensure all is well. If your blog is old and a lot of changes have been made, then chances are good you have database tables in your MyAdmin section for PHP in your host account that do not need to be there anymore. Actually, you can do quite a bit with your tables, and it may be hard to identify if a table is no longer needed, so proceed with caution. Bear in mind that this really pertains to older blogs that have been through a lot over the years. Once again, if this is all new territory, then do not go in there knowing nothing; find some information to learn from and then do it.
If you are not familiar with using CSS, and you make your own static HTML sites, then you know that you are putting a lot of unnecessary code all over your site. We cannot go in depth about CSS, but it helps to keep a lot of that kind of code out of your site pages which makes them faster. This approach using CSS is extremely helpful for very large sites so each page does not have to be changed. Also, do not forget about caching, and that happens once the visitor has been to your site. One other point is the proliferation of template sites that are coded in CSS and HTML - there, problem solved. As we said elsewhere, large sites of more than ten or twenty pages will become a huge problem if you have to edit every page for something.
There is always value in knowing a little bit about a topic, and in this case it is website design. What we are specifically getting at here is the ability to tweek your sites to your complete satisfaction. Some people love to learn while others do not so much, so how much you want to do is up to you; but at least gain some familiarity. You have been to enough sites on the net, and just visiting yours will give you an idea about speed. Without working on improving your website's overall speed, you'll find that a large number of visitors may come, leave and never come back. The thing about this is all your traffic, your visitors, they will leave yous site in a heartbeat if it is perceived or believed to be too slow.
