If you are the owner of a website that has not had that much success in terms of site traffic, you probably have to do a check-up of your search engine optimization efforts on the site. There are some easy things that you can do to make sure that your site ranks well in the search engines' results pages.
The first tool that you have is Google Analytics. This is free and very simple to learn. This is for site owners who are not paying for an SEO firm to do the work for them. Google Analytics can tell you the number of people who go to your site, the keywords that they have used to get there, the website from which they have been referred, the time they spent on your site, the page they last visited, and many other relevant things.
This information from Google Analytics is very useful. But you cannot have any success with this information if you do not act upon it. You need to tweak your website in a way that responds to the information that you get. One important information that you can get from Google Analytics is the kind of visitors that your website is attracting. Do you get the right kind of people to view your site? Are they potential customers? If your answer is no, you need to tweak the Title meta tag as well as the content that you have on the site. For instance, maybe you want to attract people looking for 'web design' instead of 'web development'.
Tool number two is to look at your links. There are plenty of tools that you can find these days which are free of charge. They will let you know if you have links that are broken. Take advantage of these tools and find the broken links. If there are any, work on fixing them right away.
Another thing that you can do is to go on your favoured search engine website and search for the keywords that you want to rank for. Do two kinds of searches, one for global and one that is location-specific. Look at the back links to see if you are on the same business directory as the top-ranking websites. This can be easily done with the help of a 'backlink checker' tool.
The meta information you have is also something that needs to be checked. Look at the Title Meta tag that every page has. Does it accurately say what the pages contain? Are the relevant keywords present on the meta tag? If you need to, make sure that the titles are location-specific such as 'travel tips Hawaii'. The description meta tag must also be looked into to see that every page has a varying description tag. Google is hardly a fan of information that is repeated.
