Most IM marketers prefer to use search engine optimization as a method for traffic generation. As you know, if you have a website or blog, then you'll need to have traffic to it because if not there's no point. IM marketers value search engine visitors and traffic because it's not paid advertising, plus it will convert better than other forms of traffic. There are two problems with most beginner, and some experienced, marketers, and that is they either have a poor understanding of SEO, or they don't have any at all. They're so wrapped-up with getting their site in the search engines that they take shortcuts, or they don't really take the time to learn. The unfortunate aspect is that this will always lead to problems, so we'll discuss these so you won't have those problems. You can take any one of these methods and really go all out in your business because they will open up new venues for you, to be sure. You probably know that a great many will overlook or ignore this encouragement, but all that matters is what you will do or are willing to do. One thing you can easily do is test Joe Walter on a small scale, and that is another approach we tell people to try - just do a small test and decide. All businesses have to set their limits concerning how they want to promote themselves, and that fact is not lost on us.
In fact, it is those who skip over their homework who are at most risk and for obvious reasons. There are those who will sell you just about anything while telling you it is some undiscovered method that not too many know about yet, those should be alarms. But you should not be afraid of anything that appears to be new to you because there are some products that are excellent. We are not worried about what we are telling you about today, but since you do not know us - then that means you have to verify everything. What you will usually end up doing is not wasting your time and money.
Avoid the use of any images for your headings and site menus as this will be counter-productive to your efforts. Of course people like images, and there are tons of great ones to use, but using them in certain places on your site is not advised for search engines. The reason is simple - search engine spiders cannot read images and only look out for text.
Using an image in your heading prevents your use of H1, H2, etc tages in its place, and you're just missing another opportunity to optimized your website. Search engines read your site to make the greatest determination about how useful your site is to the reader. You'll be taking maximum advantage of SEO by using text, or CSS coded text, in the heading area. If you choose to go with a professional SEO company, rather than doing the job yourself, then you should be really careful about the whole process. The type of SEO firm you decide on will have an impact on how the search engines perceive and react to your site. Some companies use blackhat systems to rank your site and if you use them you might end up losing everything if your site gets banned. For this reason, you need to be responsible and communicate clearly to the company what you want and what you don't want, as well as what your expectations are of them. When looking for a company to work with make sure to use a little common sense as well as some research to decide.
You also need to be aware of javascript menus and avoid them because search engine spiders cannot read them. You'll need to change your site coding for it if you're using it right now. But if you still want to have it, then you need to consider having a strong sitemap so that your site's links are crawlable. It's very important that your pages are indexed, and they need to be crawled to make that happen, so do these things and make your site nav structure clean, simple and optimized.
Remember to be careful because there is so much bad information on the net about search engine optimization. There are very few people who will actually tell you what's working and what's not. This is why it's important to keep your eyes open and look out for mistakes like the ones we discussed above.
